The Drops: Gating Tag
Description
Gating is the process through which pieces that start off board (in the players 'reserve', 'hand' or 'pocket') can be transferred to the board as a side effect of moving some piece that is already on board. This in contrast to plain 'dropping' (or 'parachuting'), where a piece from the hand can be put on an empty board square as a move on its own. Several forms of gating have been used: * In Seirawan Chess hand pieces can appear on the the back rank, on the square evacuated when a piece moves for the first time. * In Pioneer Chess this is similar, except that one has to decide in a game prelude at which square each hand piece will appear. * In Accessory Chess and Alternative Chess hand pieces are introduced on the 2nd rank on the sequare evacuated by a Pawn, when this is pushed 1 or 2 squares forward, respectively. * In Pilgrim Chess this is similar, but the location of introduction of each piece has to be decided in a game prelude. * Basilisk Chess and Perier Chess are variants where the hand pieces are gated onto the back rank when the pawn in fromt of an empty square there is pushed 1 or 2 squares forward, respectively. Virtually all these introduction methods have been invented by Mats Winther.
