Recharged Chess
By Gerd P. Degens
The game is played on a 9 x 9 board. Each player has 27 pieces. Eight of these are pawns on the base line, which are upgraded ('recharged') on ranks 2 or 8.
Setup
Pieces
Standard set of pieces plus additional pieces - see below for details.
Rules
With the exception of the following, the FIDE rules apply.
There is no capturing en passant, bare king loses, stalemate is a win.
Pawns on the baselines are upgraded ('recharged') on ranks 2 and 8 depending on the move direction (left, forward or right) as follows:
Upon reaching the 2nd or the 8th rank, a Pawn promotes to the piece that started on that space.
That means, that a pawn coming from the files:
a and i become either chancellorrider or zecari pieces,
b and h become chancellorrider, zecari or nightrider pieces,
c and g mutate to zecari, nightrider or cardinalrider pieces and
d and f can upgrade to nightrider, cardinalrider or amazonrider pieces.
However, it is still possible to skip promotion ranks 2 and 8 and continue as a pawn on ranks 3 and 7 - even if this rarely happens.
The following applies to a white pawn on rank 7:
It can either reach rank 8 and be upgraded there according to the above rule, or it goes to rank 9 and can decide there whether it becomes one of the following pieces: amazonrider, nightrider, cardinalrider chancellorrider or zecari. This also means that a pawn move from e6/e7 to e8 results in an amazonrider (applies vice versa for black).
The pieces move as follows:
pawn | steps one square diagonally forward to an empty square, or straight ahead, or slides to the 2nd square straight ahead
amazonrider | slides in all 8 directions, or repeatedly makes a knight's jump in the same direction
nightrider | repeatedly makes a knight's jump in the same direction
cardinalrider | slides diagonally, or repeatedly makes a knight's jump in the same direction
chancellorrider | slides orthogonally, or repeatedly makes a knight's jump in the same direction
zecari | repeatedly makes a (3,2) leap in the same direction, or repeatedly makes a (3,1) leap in the same direction
king | steps one square in all 8 directions, or castles by stepping 3 squares towards the pawn |
