Jump-a-long Chess
Jump-a-long Chess plays like normal chess, but incorporates two "jump-a-long" piece types, which may jump over any number of squares, as long as all those squares are occupied.
Setup
Pieces
Jumpalongwazir
The Jumpalongwazir can step or jump any number of squares orthogonally, but only when all of the intermediate squares (if any) are occupied.
Jumpalongferz
The Jumpalongferz can step or jump any number of squares diagonally, but only when all of the intermediate squares (if any) are occupied.
Pawn, Rook, Knight, Bishop, Queen, King
Rules
Pawns starting on the third rank don't have an initial double step option.
Pawns may promote to a Jumpalongwazir or Jumpalongferz as well, in addition to their normal promotion possibilities.
All other rules as in standard chess.
Notes
The interactive diagram estimates the piece values for the jump-a-long pieces as less than a Knight, about two pawns, the Jumpalongwazir a little bit more.
They are kind of anti-riders (operate on closed lines), so I think they open up an extra dimension of play, as closed lines become open to attack. And whereas rook and bishop become more valuable towards the end game, the jump-a-long pieces become less valuable.
Perhaps something like this has been done before, though. This 'user submitted' page is a collaboration between the posting user and the Chess Variant Pages.
