Because Smess pieces have the same type of FIDE chess pieces, so it is also playable with chess suit except you don't need knights, bishops, queens, and need an extra suit of chess pieces(to get two more Numskulls because they're represented by Rook), and Brains simply Kings, Ninnies simply Pawns. Also, if you have Smess board then that's better, if you want to use FIDE board then ignore h column, then draw the corresponding directions(arrows) on every grid.
