The easiest way to implement the drop rule would be by playing with Shogi
pieces. Did you consider more than one possibility for the short-range
version of the Cannon? My own idea for short-range hopping pieces is that
they move exactly two spaces, giving one intermediate cell which must be
occupied when capturing - the Musket (hopping Dabbaba) and Spear (hopping
Elephant) of my article The Heavy Brigade
