Cambodian Chess ZIP file. Mysterious 9x9 "Cambodian" Chess game that seems unknown in Cambodia.[All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]
Robert Shimmin wrote on Mon, Dec 2, 2002 02:41 PM UTC:
I can't imagine this game was ever played much, or if played much, ever
played well.

If the second player adopts a symmetrical defense, then the first player
is forced to sacrifice material, possibly a lot of material, in order to
break symmetry. The only way to break symmetry is to capture one ship
(rook) with another down a file, or to check the enemy king. But either
of these require opening a gap in the pawn structure, and the second
player can always come out ahead materially in the process of opening such
a gap.

The Zip file appears to contain no ZRF, just images.

Peter Aronson wrote on Tue, May 11, 2004 05:46 AM UTC:
There certainly is a ZRF in there, named Chess_Cambodian, and placed in the directory created. Perhaps there is a problem with the program you're using for unzipping?

Alexander E. Stevens wrote on Wed, May 12, 2004 06:39 PM UTC:
Maybe so... I'm using XP and it has shelled support for Zip files now. Everytime I open the zip, there appears to be no ZRF in any of the zipped directories.

Tony Quintanilla wrote on Thu, May 13, 2004 02:53 AM UTC:
I found the same thing. However, XP seems to have this problem only with archived ZRFs that are named something like, something_chess.zrf instead of something.zrf.

Using the evaluation version of WinZip 9.0 under XP, I get all the files, but only once I record cambodianchess.zip on my hard drive, not if I open it immediately.

I used WinRAR and got it.
Apparently the XP shell support for zip files doesn't like underscores?

The game is very easy to fall into the stalemate. I suspect the variant is not real Cambodian Chess, because it lacks playable strategic and no Cambodia people plays or mentions it.

I think the vaiant was invented by one persion who both liked Chinese Chess and Thai Chess. He wanted to combine these chess, so invented this variant.

If the elephant jumpes like Ailfi(2,2 jumper) and also steps like the elephant of Thai Chess, the variant may be somewhat playable.

I like this idea of Kar Ouk, so I implemented the variant(based on MAKRUK.zrf implemented by Malcolm Maynard).
