Yes, that's one of the default chess sets included with ZoG. See Atlantis chess for a screenshot which includes the full program window and the same set.

So what is the legal status w.r.t. their use? If it is OK to use them in diagram images on CVP, would it also be OK to post an identically looking Interactive Diagram that uses images of original pieces?

I checked the ZoG website, but I could not find any information regarding copyright of the images.

I have refrained from uploading them here for use with Game Courier or Interactive Diagrams, because I have assumed they are proprietary. Also, with the piece sets we already have, I have never felt the need to have them here.

Indeed, they must be proprietry. So I wondered whether their use in diagrams that apparently were uploaded as screenshots from Zillions are legal here. I can imagine the Zillions license explicitly allows posting of screenshots, which is sort of advertizing for them. An Interactive Diagram would be more like a competitor, though. The general rule is that when there is no explicit license to copy, it is not allowed.
I agree we don't really need that piece set, which I don't particularly like anyway. But when I replace the setup diagram of an article by an I.D., I try to make it as similar as possible to the original. This is not strictly necessary, but when there also are other images in the article (e.g. move diagrams, or positions from a sample game, as is rhe case here), it looks ugly when they use different piece sets.
The style of this ZoG set looks different from most other sets, as it shows entire pieces rather than symbolic top parts. I could use Galactic as a replacement, which also does that. But I like that piece set even less. It seems the ZoG set only supports orthodox pieces, so it should not be too much work to create a set in a somewhat similar style in SVG. Perhaps I should do that.

Maybe, but what really looks ugly is using ugly piece sets. This is why I will sometimes replace ugly sets with better looking ones. In this case, this game comes with Zillions-of-Games, and someone is showing a sample game from Zillions-of-Games itself, which justifies using that image in this context.

I also like Galactic less.

It might be nice to replace Galactic with much higher quality images.

I made an SVG piece set similar to the ZoG set; I doubt there is much copyrightable in the design, as it is basically just images of Staunton pieces. I uploaded the SVG images to /graphics.dir/svg/staunton, so that fen2.php can use those with a t=staunton in the query string.

I often encounter piece sets like in the diagram at the bottom of this page, which do seem to be not available on CVP. Does anyone know where these come from? Are these ZoG screenshots?
