Okay, a quick question about the pass. Is it fair to presume that using the pass squares to get to the opposite side of the board is an option? In other words, one has the option, at any given time, to use them just like regular squares without using them as a transit spots?

Yes of course. One have a freedom of option to use this square for transfer or not.

The promotion rule says you can promote to Unicorn, but there is no description of this piece.  Did you mean Fil?

In the only game recorded on Game Courier, the movement of the Unicorn was consistent with the movement of a Fil, and all four Unicorns began in the same positions as the Fils in the diagram on this page.
