T.R. Dawson didn't invent the leo. You must be confused with the grasshopper

Helmsman ChessA game information page
. Introducing the Helmsman and the bounce-move, whereby the piece deviates orthogonally. A very positional piece (zrf available).[All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]

Isn't the helmsman the same as the murmillo?

Rookheavy Chess and Bishopheavy Chess. combining elements of Lilliputian Chess, Isis, Mongolian Chess, and crooked linepieces. (8x8, Cells: 64) [All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]

This game is really fun to play and the crowned linepiece queen an interesting idea. but why have marshalls in bishopheavy chess and cardinals in rookheavy chess This is by far the one of the easiest to understand and most interesting of your new games. I however prefer ryuma or dragon horse for primate and ryou or dragon king for chatelaine mainly i'm not much of an english terminologist. Anyway this is readily accessable for me I have tried both games and loved them both however. even though rookheavy seems the more powerful game none of the pieces are worth more than a queen!

Isis and Cam. Two variants based on ancient English universities and the rivers near them. (6x8, Cells: 48) [All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]

your frog is an example of an amphibian which is a compound of two pieces which has more range than it's components. another example would be the governor a compound of of the raumschach unicorn and bishop. even another would be the silver general a compound of japanese pawn or as you call it, the point and ferz. maybe you should make an article on amphibians!

The Clash of Civilizations Chess (Shuffle Version). Missing description (10x10, Cells: 100) [All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]
Andy Maxson wrote on Thu, Feb 15, 2007 05:13 AM UTC:Excellent ★★★★★
This game looks really cool so does clash of civilizations chess and all it's variants. how about airplane chess? there is a reasonably weak applet to play it on ed friedlander's site or here. And by the way, Jeremy the cobra moves as a rook it is more vunerable than the wall of ganymede chess but has more capture power. Another piece which is related to it is the dev from koksal karakus' giant chess which moves as a wazir but all squares must be threatened for it to be captured. another are sultans pieces from charles gilman's sultans elephant chess but cannot move to part full super squares

Idaidakama Shogi. Like Maka-Dai-Dai with drops and new pieces. (19x19, Cells: 361) [All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]

has this game been playtested?

Quinquereme Chess. Large variant with a new piece, the Quinquereme. (12x12, Cells: 144) [All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]
Andy Maxson wrote on Fri, Feb 16, 2007 06:13 PM UTC:Excellent ★★★★★
This game looks really cool! The only thing cooler would be adding squirrels behind rooks and adding quang trung rooks and shifting the setup one rank forwards so there would still be redeployment space. The squirrels would add more leaping power and the quang trung rooks which capture by leaping over a piece as in checkers but quang trung rooks can only capture one piece in a move. The quang trung rooks could ignore defended pieces and would make the game more interesting. The quang trung rooks would be below zebras. There could also be renn cavaliers below quintesences but that would be wishful thinking

Separate. Queens start trapped behind enemy lines. (8x8, Cells: 64) [All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]

can the queens capture?

Andy Maxson wrote on Mon, Feb 19, 2007 11:38 PM UTC:Excellent ★★★★★
sure! im up for a challenge but i don't have zillions

Samarcanda. Variant of Mideast Chess with Crooked Bishops. (10x10, Cells: 100) [All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]
Andy Maxson wrote on Tue, Feb 20, 2007 03:51 AM UTC:Good ★★★★
this looks interesting with crooked bishops replacing the monstrous cavaliers. However the crooked bishop's move is not related to any sort of mideastern piece, the cavalier was related to the well known gryphon. Maybe you could add renn cavaliers instead of the mideast cavaliers and guards a fusion of the ferz and wazir or maybe replace the queen with the mideast cavalier or as ed friedlander calls it the godzilla and and replace the godzillas that flank the king and queen with queens. maybe this variant i propose could face hawaiian chess

Omega Chess. Rules for commercial chess variant on board with 104 squares. (12x12, Cells: 104) (Recognized!)[All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]
Andy Maxson wrote on Tue, Feb 20, 2007 04:37 PM UTC:Excellent ★★★★★
Though the corner squares may appeal aesthetically the take away lots of the rooks power. How about taking away the corner squares and just adding squares behind the champions? Or maybe next to them?

HyperModern Shatranj. Missing description (8x8, Cells: 64) [All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]

The elephant can reach half the squares on the board. how about replacing elephants with waffles an the sliding general with a panther which moves 1 or two squares in any direction but cannot jump

Andy Maxson wrote on Tue, Feb 20, 2007 10:14 PM UTC:Excellent ★★★★★
Where i got the panther name was the exotic pieces applet. I like the
waffle beacause
it is not colorbound so the game flows quicklier. This game might actually
be on par with chess it is just a little to weak so maybe if there was an
added weak piece it could battle chess. But anyway shatranj variants are
really interesting to me

Leap Chess. Game with mandatory captures and other Checkers-like elements on a board of 44 squares. (6x8, Cells: 44) [All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]
Andy Maxson wrote on Tue, Feb 20, 2007 10:48 PM UTC:Good ★★★★
I am actually working on a variant like this called leapers chess which replaces rooks with wooden rooks, bishops with wooden bishops, and the queen with a centaur which moves as a nonroyal king or as a knight. I am actually writing an entry for it right now!

Wormhole Chess. When a piece leaves a square, it `folds' together. (8x8, Cells: 64) [All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]

This game looks interesting but isnt the queen as strong as the rooks?

Andy Maxson wrote on Wed, Feb 21, 2007 01:53 AM UTC:Good ★★★★
What I meant was isn't your rook substitute as strong as your queen substitute?

Centennial Chess. 10x10 Variant that adds Camels, Stewards, Rotating Spearmen and Murray Lions to the standard mix. (10x10, Cells: 100) [All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]
Andy Maxson wrote on Wed, Feb 21, 2007 05:27 AM UTC:Good ★★★★
This game looks really interesting along with millenial chess I have actually thought of a game like this on ten by ten board with the orthochess setup pused one rank forwards so the pawns would not move differntly and adding camels. stewards, quang trung rooks and nonroyal kings

Separate Realms. Pieces capture like normal FIDE pieces, but have limited moves that only take them to part of the board when not capturing. (8x8, Cells: 64) [All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]
Andy Maxson wrote on Thu, Feb 22, 2007 08:06 PM UTC:Good ★★★★
how about an alternate rook which moves sideways as a dabbaba rider and forwards and backwards as a rook and an alternate bishop that moves as an alfilrider parralel to the long diagonal and as a bishop parrallel to the short diagonal? these bout hav interesting types of colorboundness as the rook cannot reach adjacent files and the bishop cannot reach adjacent same colored diagonals. these pieces would capture as there orthochess counterparts

Immobilizer. Pieces standing near an immobilizer may not move.[All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]
Andy Maxson wrote on Thu, Feb 22, 2007 08:22 PM UTC:Good ★★★★
this piece looks intersting but has little mobility when immobilizing I
have invented a piece,
the basilisk which moves as a queen cannot capture, but immobilizes
pieces a knight's move away.

Brigadier Chess. Introducing the powerful Brigadier piece on a 68-square Gustavian board.[All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]

this is an interesting break from the same ol, amazon, this should be of the sam value and would be a intersting to see fighting the amazon what would be even cooler would be a queen plus korean lion

Andy Maxson wrote on Mon, Feb 26, 2007 06:43 PM UTC:Excellent ★★★★★
the brigadier has more in common with optima's dauphin than optima's general atually the brigadier is the same as optima's dauphin
